Upgrading to Windows 8
Windows 8 is not your mother's version of Windows. For years, Apple enthusiasts have argued that the Apple operating systems are superior because of their innovative designs and intuitive navigation. Windows 8 offers that and more. In addition, you can still use Windows 8 with your computer's Blu Ray DVD burners, double layer DVDs, and other utilities and capabilities. However, there are a few things to consider before you decide to upgrade.
The first consideration is the new interface. Instead of the traditional Start menu, you will encounter a desktop that offers "Charms," or application buttons. The Charms are designed to offer an interface that is similar to a smartphone or a tablet. While many critics have touted this change as one of the best features of Windows 8, users who are strongly attached to the old Windows interface may have difficulty adapting to the change.
The next thing to consider before you purchase Windows 8 for download is if your computer is capable of supporting it. Your computer will require a 1-Ghz processor, and 1 GB of ram for the 32-bit version, or 2 GB of ram for the 64-bit version. In addition, you will need 16 GB of free hard drive space to install the 32-bit version, or 20 for the 64-bit version. Finally, your computer needs a MS DirectX 9 graphics card with a WDDM driver to work with Windows 8.
Third, consider your computer itself. Windows 8 was designed to work with touch-screen computers. Although you can use Windows 8 on a standard PC, if you are in the market for an upgrade, you may wish to purchase a touch-screen computer first.
Finally, consider how much time you have to learn the Windows 8 system. There is a learning curve associated with this new operating system, and if you do not have a day or so to sit down and learn the ropes, you might consider putting off upgrading until you have the time to devote to learning the new interface.
