Protecting Yourself on the Internet
Each day, millions of Americans go online to work, socialize, play games, and even purchase and download music to record on CD R music CDs or blank media CD Rs. Staying at home and surfing the web seems like a harmless pastime, but it can be just as dangerous as going out in public. Identity theft, bullying, and misrepresentation are just a few threats that you can encounter on the Internet. Take steps to defend yourself online and keep your Internet experience a safe and fun one.
Defending against hacking and identity theft is a necessity. Install and use a good security system that will defend against most viruses and privacy threats. Allow the security program to automatically update so you will always be protected against the latest viruses and worms. It is also a good idea to use an anti-spyware program in addition to your antivirus software. In addition to the programs you use, watch the information you post online. Including your address, phone number, place of employment, and other personal information on social media sites gives thieves information about you that can help them gain access to your financial records.
Some Internet threats are less obvious. Cyberbullying has become a hot topic in the media. This type of bullying is most likely to affect school-age children, so parents should monitor their children's e-mail and social media accounts carefully. Report bullying to school authorities, or if threats are made, report to the local police. Adults experiencing cyber bullying should report the matter to their employer, if the bully is someone they know at work, or to the local police.
Online dating is rapidly becoming the most popular way to meet significant others. However, it is important to use common sense before meeting someone in person. Children and teens should always have an adult present, even if they are meeting another child. Pedophiles and other criminals often pretend to be a child to earn a child's trust. Adults should meet in a public place and have access to a cell phone, or have another adult on hand in case the situation or person seems suspicious.
