Your computer is not just another appliance or piece of electronics that you can simply use when you need it. To preserve the life of your computer, you must maintain it. Following some simple maintenance tips can help your computer continue running smoothly and without errors.

First, consolidate your desktop files. Many of us are guilty of placing files on the desktop without organizing them. Not only does this make documents hard to find, but you are also causing your computer to run more slowly. It is also a good idea to back up your files on an archival DVD or a blank media CD R.

Next, get rid of all programs that you do not use. Whether it is a game that you downloaded and never used again or a picture editing program that is obsolete, these programs take up space on your hard drive.

Keep the programs that you use updated. These updates are usually designed to make the programs run more efficiently and without bugs or errors. Signing up for automatic updates is a good idea, especially for your operating system and your antivirus program.

Reboot your computer at least once per day. Rebooting allows the RAM to reset, which helps your computer to run faster. In addition, rebooting allows the computer the opportunity to fix file errors before they inhibit the functioning of the computer.

Clean your computer regularly. Dust and debris settle on the keyboard and other working parts and can interfere with the internal workings. Use cleaners and products that are meant for the computer, however, to avoid causing damage to the computer.
